Return of the Stray

Dusty & Wildfield

(Single)

A country noir ballad from "Wild Bitch Season Part 3: Things Will Never Be the Same Again." She leaves, she returns, she leaves again — never quite home anywhere. The stray who keeps circling back, locked between two doors. Track from the novel's original soundtrack.

Left the door, hit the street, cuttin’ corners too tight Didn’t look, didn’t turn, but her breath said goodbye Stray runs home, stray runs wild Stray don’t wait, stray just hides Stray don’t stay, stray don’t stay Back again, same ol’ step, but the locks ain't the same Window's shut, hands are cold, but she still spells my name Stray runs home, stray runs wild Stray don’t wait, stray just hides Stray don’t stay, stray don’t stay Keys dropped. Lights dimmed. She don’t speak but I see what she means Stray runs home, stray runs slow Stray stands still, don’t quite know Stray don’t stay, stray don’t stay Stray steps in, stray stays near Stray don’t talk, but stray is here Stray might stay, stray might stay Stray lays down, stray breathes deep Stray stays caught, stray don’t leave Stray won’t stray, stray won’t stray Gone back. Locked in.

Trivia
The stray in the song works on two levels. On the surface, a dog circling back to the porch — scratching at doors, not quite let in, not quite chased away. Underneath, the woman who leaves her husband, comes back, leaves again. The "bitch" reading is there if you want it — unfaithful to two men at once, belonging to neither. Home in the lyrics stands for more than a building. Wherever her man is. She has two homes, which means she has none. "Stray don't stay" speaks to the inability to choose, not the urge to wander. She's not abandoned. She's stuck. The song ends abruptly: "Gone back. Locked in." That's her decision. She returns to her husband and stays. In the "Wild Bitch Season Part 3" timeline, this moment leads directly to Raphaël Varnier's "Adieu" — the protagonist's lyrical answer to her choice.
